Practicing Safe Sun
In the summertime, we basically turn into vampires around here, desperately adjusting hats and applying, then re-applying, broad spectrum or mineral sunscreen to protect our fair skin, the vulnerability of which, is one of the downsides to having red hair. While we go to great lengths to protect our skin, however, I’ll shamefully admit that when choosing sunglasses, the UV protection factor is never at the top of my mind. I buy decent sunglasses, but I didn’t even pay attention to whether my Ray Ban aviators offer 100% UV protection when I bought them (they do), nor do I ever check when buying a cheap and cheerful pair. Now that I’m not only buying sunglasses for myself, but for Viggo and Gigi as well, I decided it was time to #practicesafesun and educate myself when it comes to choosing sufficient eye protection. Here’s what I learned:
- Always choose sunglasses that offer 100% UV protection. That little sticker is more than just a pain in the butt to peel off!
- The bigger, the better. Though my oversize sunglasses have all been chosen based on aesthetics (due in part to my admiration of Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly), bigger sunglasses simply provide more coverage and prevent damaging rays from entering the eye at the sides.
- Bells and whistles like coloured lenses and polarization don’t correlate with better protection. While they can increase contrast (making some summer sports like golf, easier), and cut glare (which is great if you’re driving or on the water), the thing to look for in conjunction with these extras is still that little sticker that indicates 100% protection from ultra violet rays.
- The good news is that price doesn’t matter–you don’t have to spend a fortune to adequately protect your eyes as long as…you guessed it…they offer 100% UV protection.
I love the overisize, round sunglasses from Clearly that I’m wearing here. They offer a lot of protection (courtesy of the large lenses), and a fun, 1970s-inspired aesthetic, which compliments my flare jeans and off shoulder top perfectly.
