I be braidin'

So much for my resolution to try one new hairstyle per week. I have failed miserably. I knew it was too soon to commit, that is, until this gem of a book serendipitously arrived.

The New Braiding Handbook: 60 Modern Twists on the Classic Hairstyles promises to help you master braiding techniques beyond the basic French–and on yourself, to boot! Even though I was the only one out of my mom and two sisters who could French braid in my house growing up (always the braider, never the braided), I found the prospect intimidating.

“She must be a braiding ninja”, I thought, glancing doubtfully at the Bohemian Crown. “There’s no way I can do that”. But as I read on, I discovered that the author, Abby Smith, wrote the book because she herself was tired of not knowing how to properly style her hair. She spent the next two years educating herself–first, about how to maintain a healthier, longer mane, and then, how to do all of those hairstyles she had always wanted to wear but could never do herself. I really enjoyed the read because in addition to some great braids, she also shows you how to achieve textured beach waves, how to execute wand curls resulting in lush, loose waves as opposed to ringlets, and how to do the perfect ponytail. Because I already know how to French braid, I chose to attempt the Bohemian Crown–a braided crown that’s a more sophisticated version of the Milkmaid Braids I have grown so fond of wearing. You can watch a video tutorial on how to do a Dutch Braid by Abby here. Plus check out her blog for more braid tutorials and to buy a copy of The New Braided Handbook for yourself!

So here’s my very first attempt at a Bohemian Crown. I love it because it looks like I spent a ton of time on my hair in the morning when it really only took me about 10 minutes. And it keeps my hair off of my face and neck, which is great during the hot, humid summer months here in Southern Ontario. I should mention that this time of year also marks one of my favourite holidays–no, not Canada Day–the biannual Zara sale!! I picked up this slightly oversize, minimalist, Margiela-esque dress there on the weekend and wore it here with cage sandals, my leather biker, and minimal gold jewellery.
