Something New

Up to now, I haven’t done many beauty posts but I’ve been known to paint a good face in my day, so why not? I had been thinking about including more beauty on the blog for a while but had put it off–and then a box of glossy products from Clarins’ new spring line, Opalescence, arrived on my doorstep.

I tried the Joli Rouge Brilliant lipstick in Petal Pink, the Instant Light Radiance Boosting Complexion Base in Champagne, the Multi-Blush Cream Compact in Candy, and the Limited Edition Vibrant Light Eye Quartet Mineral Palette. All of the products were a pleasure to wear–the lipstick made my lips feel plump and hydrated and washed them in a veil of sheer, natural colour. The base felt light on my skin but I used it in place of my BB cream for an “ultra-natural” finish and although it was a little too natural for my liking (I’m used to my more strongly pigmented BB cream), I noticed that my skin felt hydrated–but not in an oily way–before I removed my makeup that evening. It seems to me like it lives up to its promise of being “part makeup, part skin care”.

For me, the real standouts however, were the Limited Edition Mineral shadow palette and the Multi-Blush. I loved the cream to powder texture of the blush, which is perfect for the warmer weather. A traditionalist when it comes to makeup, I like my palettes baked, but the Multi-Blush just might have made me a cream blush convert. The longevity of the cheerful, spring-y shade put my go-to blush to shame.

The eye palette was a visual feast of rich purples and plums that can be applied dry for a more subtle daytime look, or wet for knock ’em dead drama by night. I applied the shadow dry but used the deep plum shade all over the lid for a bolder daytime eye. I love the colours–it’s the perfect palette for green eyes–and the shadow had staying power, waning only when I took my first swipe at it with makeup remover late in the evening. The fact that I didn’t have to reapply is a huge bonus for me and it means that the products will be among by go-tos during the hot (read sweaty), summer months ahead!
