There's nothing like a good swing
Much to my husband’s dismay, I have always been drawn to clothes with volume–interesting shapes, empire waists, swingy silhouettes. They make me feel so feminine. So I was thrilled to find this blue swing dress on the sale rack at Joe Fresh in the fall. As per usual, there were several of them left despite the fact that they were more than 75% off their original price. Plus it has pockets! Is everyone else crazy? I always LOVE the stuff no one else wants…My theory is, in this case at least, that most women that aren’t a size 00 are afraid of voluminous shapes, but really, they are to be embraced. I feel like it’s sort of a right of passage in fashion (for a woman at least), to move beyond form-fitting clothing that screams sex (which is something I think defines our younger selves), to a place where cut, shape, and an overall evolved sense of style come into play. There’s something about my cocoon coat that puts an extra spring in my step. I love the way my flowy pants feel as they graze my legs. I get a thrill when my trapeze dress pools around me as I sit. Maybe it’s just my thang but if you’ve never given volume a chance, you should. It’s liberating. But a word of advice: you can have too much of a good thing. If you go big somewhere, then go small everywhere else. Pair your baggy pants with a sleek tank or wear a swingy blouse with skinny bottoms to avoid looking sloppy.
